The LMBCS Executive team in collaboration with UBC's Utsav Graduate Students' Club put yet another great event together with this year's Rabindra Jayanti.  The membership once again gathered at the impressive UBC Asian Centre to celebrate Rabindranath Tagore's impressive literary work.  All the attendees were greeted by Arnab Sen, this year's newly appointed treasurer.

Arnab was hard at work with his father by his side meticulously noting down people's names and addresses as they paid their membership fees.

This year's performances were unique and original.  Srabarna Dasgupta, this year's Secretary introduced each performer.  The audience was treated with more modern compositions influenced by Rabindra Sangeet.  Songs featuring guitar, saxophone and great vocals opened up Rabindra Sangeet lovers to a new style of their beloved musical form.  Dance and poetry recitations followed which were refreshing as always.

After a few performances snacks and refresments were served by Mitun Chakrabarti, her husband Subrata and Nandini Sen.  The attendees munched on delicious samosas and dhokla.  The dhokla, which Natasha Ghosh, the Vice President, brought, was especially tasty.  Cha and Ladoo made for a nice cullinary conclusion along with of course the usual chit chat.  One group of people argued about the origin of Rasugola while lamenting over the obvious superiority of Bengali sweets to that of its Indian counterparts.

After enjoying snacks and refresments the audience watched a short movie called "The Postmaster" by the famous Bengali Director Satyajit Ray.  The movie stirred emotions as well as a dicussion that followed.  Chinmoy Uncle and Thirthankar Uncle explored the ideas behind the subtle story and gave some suggestions about possible themes.  Differing opinions were abound as they always are when it comes to movies and Bengalis.

Thus Rabindra Jayanti 2008 ended with a content audience departing to get back to their busy lives.
